Artists 2022

The first Matariki art exhibition at Pipitea Marae held during Matariki.

Artists 1995

The first Matariki art exhibition at Pipitea Marae was wholeheartedly supported by over 20 renowned Māori artists.

Exhibit 1

The well-known Māori film maker, Eruera Nia, erected a large star shape construction around which we placed clay artwork paintings and sculptures. Some of these artists ‘pioneered’ the contemporary Māori art movement such as Para Matchitt who couriered us a large wooden heart. Ralph Hotere sent in his signature. There were so many more, but it is with the greatest respect that we remember the graciousness and foresight of all these wonderful artists. Some of whom have passed on who supported our humble efforts to resurrect Matariki as a time to celebrate us as Māori.

Exhibit 2

Fred Graham and his son Brett Graham sent us in delicately rendered pencil drawings. Manos Nathan and Baye Riddell honoured us with their powerful clay art works. Jolene Douglas, Colleen Urlich and Gabrielle Belz: all vibrantly powerful Māori women artists sent us equally powerful taonga. Chris Bryant-Toi was able to send us two panels adorned with kōwhaiwhai illustrative of a time in our colonial history that remains with us today.
